LAND GRANT OWNERSHIP
& HISTORY
In ancient times, all land in Hawai’i was owned by the King. Land titles commenced after the death of King Kamehameha I in 1819. However, these titles were not permanent until a series of legislative changes that allowed for common ownership.
This process started in 1859, with the land subdivided into smaller plots which were defined by geographical features such as streams, mountains, cliffs, large rocks, and stone walls.
To create a more accurate process, The Hawaian Homelands was created in 1920 using latitude and longitude coordinates to develop surveys and land definitions. This is how Hamakua Hideaway was eventually defined using current survey technology.
After a series of ownership changes, the property was purchased by Charles Deyo, who has continued making enhancements that honor the original vision of the Hunt family. Deyo’s main focus has been to build pathways that showcase the plant life and amazing views.
